NPR -- 'Best Practices' Learning To Live With Asperger's

upsideumop:

I think true love is when spouses hold true to their vows, especially “in sickness and in health”. I’ve listened to way too many NPR stories about married couples dealing with mental disorders.

First, there was the husband who was really loving then all of a sudden became distant to the point where the wife was considering a divorce. She then took him to the doctor for a routine physical examination and discovered there was a brain tumor growing in the part of his brain that affected the expression of emotion.

Second, there’s Mitt Romney and how wife was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. One of my favorite quotes from his interview was when his wife asked him about how she would make him dinner, he told her that he doesn’t care if he had to eat peanut butter & jelly for the rest of his life, he’d be okay with it as long as she was okay.

This story is particular cute & touching. The wife always loved the husband for his interesting quirks but she didn’t realize that those quirks were actually signs of Asperger’s Syndrome, a form of autism (despite working as a teacher for autistic children). Her husband, being absolutely loving, started writing notes down as a way for him to be a better father/husband while managing his disease. Too touching not to share.
